Nikki Needs Your Help:

Nikki desperately needs your help. When Nikki first came into our care she was extremely overweight but now that she is getting the proper exercise and diet her weight is improving weekly. The problem is the damage had already been done and due to her weight problem she tore a ligament in her knee, which now needs surgery to repair. The cost of her surgery is $2500.00. If you can help with any amount to support the cost of the surgery Nikki would be very grateful.
Nikki is a wonderful adult girl with the markings of an Alaskan Husky, the short stature of a Corgi, and a delightful, sweet personality that is uniquely her own. She is one of those dogs that can literally talk to you through her eyes. Mellow and friendly, Nikki adores other dogs and immediately made friends with the cats in her foster home who sometimes cuddle with her. Nikki's foster mom takes her every day to a nursing home where she has made friends with the residents and staff and brightens their day. Nikki will make an excellent therapy dog.
Nikki is great with everyone, she is well-behaved and sweet, quiet, nature is a perfect fit with kids. She is always aware of where her foster mom is and what she is doing and often looks at her with such thankfulness and love it actually hurts your heart to think she will be placed into another home but the good news is that her next home will be her forever one. Nikki will make an amazing companion for someone and whoever is chosen to adopt her will be a very lucky person. She would love to be adopted by a family who will be there for her during her convalescence and forever after. If you are interested in adopting Nikki, please fill out a statement of interest form found on our website: www.alternativehumanesociety.org. And/or if you can help us pay for her surgery, please do so now. You can donate via PayPal on our website or send your check to AHS, PO Box 2321, Bellingham, WA 98227.

Casey
Casey is a lovely 4 year old yellow lab who is looking for her forever home. Her ideal home would be with a family who would give her plenty of exercise. Kids or another doggy friend would also be a great fit. Casey is crate trained (but would actually rather sleep with you). Does this sound like the right dog for you? If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Casey, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website. |

Chato
Chato had a deformed front leg that had to be amputated.
He is recovering well. If you can help with his vet bill, please do.
Hello! I'm a 3 yr old male Rat Terrier and I am looking for a forever home where I will be loved and cared for the way I should, and in return I will give you my unconditional love. I am a pretty happy go lucky boy. I am good with kids, and other dogs. I love to ride in the car and I am completely house trained. I am sad to say that I broke my left foot and because I did not stay off of it like my vet told me it broke again. Since I have not used my front leg for a long time, I am recovering well from my surgery. I am waiting to get better so I can be adopted and get back to my old ways of running and playing fetch again. If you want to help me out with the vet cost to get my foot fixed you can send a payment to AHS and mark on the check "For Chato" or if you would like to meet or adopt me you can. If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Chato, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website. |

Dino
Dino is a playful, friendly, 1 ½ YO cattle dog mix, approx. 50lbs, and very affectionate. He loves kids, long walks, bike rides, car rides, chew/squeak toys, and meeting people & dogs. After spending over 7 months in a shelter, he did start foster care with no manners or boundaries, but is learning quickly and takes direction really well. He’s now crate & house trained, and knows sit, down, go, stand, pillow, kennel, wait, come and potty. He’s excellent on leash-no pulling, and loves running beside the bike. His backpack is included as it calms him, gives him a challenge, a job, a sense of purpose. Dino would benefit from an active family willing to be kind, but firm and exercise him daily. He’s definitely got a lot of personality & love to share. If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Dino, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website. |

Diva
Diva is a princess, as her name indicates, and wants to be treated as a princess should be treated. She likes to go on walks, fetch tennis balls with the ‘chuck-it’, swim, and cuddle. She loves to go for car rides. Diva is a darling little girl who wants to be the center of attention, and she would prefer to be the only pet in the house. She would be a great companion for a single person, or small family with older kids (older teens), and she does not want to live with a cat. Could this little princess be yours? If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Diva, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website. |

Houston and Rilla
Houston and Rilla are a two year old Rottweiler/Lab/Heeler brother-sister pair.
They are pretty small: about 40-50 pounds. They spend time with children everyday and are very gentle with them. Kids can sit, eat, sleep and play on the dogs and never worry about them doing anything worse than licking their faces. Houston and Rilla are both very well-behaved dogs. They've been going on walks nearly 3 miles long everyday and they are amazingly responsive and sensitive to whoever is walking them. They will not touch their food without the "OK". Rilla is the superior swimmer to Houston. Both are filled with energy and your arm will tire from fetch before they will. Give them a racquet ball and watch them entertain themselves for hours as you laugh at their hilarious show. There are no words that truly describe how incredible these two are and you will never want any others. They are family dogs, and they would really like to be adopted to the same home if possible. If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Houston and Rilla, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website.

Jack
5/17/08 update: Jack was very ill with Parvo but is now recovering. He will not be available for adoption until he is well.
Please help us pay his vet bill if you can.
Meet Jack---otherwise known as "Jack-in-the-Box". In case you're wondering, he was found running through traffic on a busy road in front of Jack in the Box... hence the name Jack. Jack could be a mixture of just about anything. We think he may have Sheltie in him, possibly Corgi, long haired Dachshund, Papillon?? Your guess is as good as ours. Jack is a young guy, probably about 6 months old. He is very smart and a quick learner. He is learning how to walk on a leash and loves to go for walks. He is doing GREAT at potty training and is learning manners. Jack is also crate trained and sleeps through the night. Jack is such a happy-go-lucky goof ball that he keeps his foster family laughing all the time. One of his absolute favorite things to do is play fetch and he even brings the ball back to you. Jack is currently waiting to get neutered and vaccinated. Please remember that puppies require a lot of time and attention and adopting a puppy is a lifelong commitment. If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Jack, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website. |

Lady
Lady is a beautiful and sweet girl who has recently had a litter of pups and is now ready for her forever home. She loves kids and is good with other dogs. If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Lady, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website.

Lyla
Lyla is a Lab mix who's looking for her forever home. She’s happy go lucky and nothing bothers her: (Her foster home has used the lawn mower, vacuum, and hair dryer around her and she does not flinch). She loves to play with people and other dogs, and just likes attention from her people friends. Lyla leaves cats alone, and is not a barker. She is a smart girl . She learns quickly and would be a good candidate for agility training. She is currently a little rambunctious with children because she just loves them so much! But with obedience training she would be fine. If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Lyla, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website.

Lyza
Lyza is a special needs dog who was severely abused as a young dog and is now a fear biter. She is terrified of men and cannot tolerate sudden movements or loud noise, thus she needs a home without men or young children. She is a darling little black and white Papillion/border collie mix, about 3 years old and not more then 30 lbs, who is well behaved but cannot be off leash without a fence because she will run away, so a fenced yard is an absolute requirement for her adoption. Once Lyza gets to know and trust you she is an absolute love. She loves to play with other dogs and she and the cat in her foster home often play together. She rides very well in the car, is crate trained, and loves to play fetch. She is completely potty trained, loves to play with her toys, can entertain herself for hours just playing with her toys, and is learning to walk with a gentle leader. If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Lyza, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website.

Valentine
Valentine is absolutely beautiful!! She is great with kids and loves human attention, but also lets you know when someone is at the door. Valentine gets along well with other dogs but is a dominant female so actually prefers males. She is in a home with cats and lives peacefully with them. Valentine would make an awesome running partner and loves to run, so a home with plenty of exercise would be best. Room and love is what this beautiful girl needs. Are you the one?? If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Valentine, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website. |

Zulu
Zulu is a sweet 6 month old Red Heeler mix. She loves to cuddle, play
frisbee (but can't catch it in the air yet), is great on trails, and great with meeting new people. She would do better in a home with older children and with people who can spend a lot of time with her and make her feel special. She needs a yard or somewhere to run but tends to keep you in her sights when off-leash. Zulu is great with other dogs but hasn't been around many cats. Could Zulu be the perfect addition to your family? If you are interested in meeting, adopting or just finding out more about Zulu, please fill out a Statement of Interest Form on this website. |

What to Consider When Adopting a Dog
Time
A puppy takes more time than a dog. It is a lot of work to teach a puppy all the things it needs to know to be a fun, healthy, happy dog. How much time? Let's start with what an adult dog needs: The average adult dog needs you to play with it, exercise it, teach it good manners, groom it, feed and water it, and let it relieve itself. Count on at least half an hour every morning, and an hour every evening. Some dogs will take more time than that. The younger the dog the more time you have to add. For very young puppies you will want to take them out to relieve themselves about every two hours. That is one reason why busy people often start with an adult dog instead of a puppy.
Responsibility
You can't forget, and you can't leave it until later. Playing, exercising, teaching, grooming, feeding and watering, and letting it relieve itself is an everyday thing. Some dogs need more of one thing, and less of another, but they all need you every single day. Your dog counts on you.
Patience
Dogs try to get away with doing what they want, instead of what you want. Adult dogs often are not properly taught, and they may need help learning. Being firm is OK. Getting angry is useless and can make things worse. Teach them in a way that makes them healthy and happy, instead of afraid or angry. It takes patience and understanding.
Consistency
Dogs don't speak human. They learn by what we do, not by what we say. So if you sometimes mean "sit" when you say "sit", and other times mean "go away" when you say "sit" don't be surprised if the dog never learns what "sit" means to you! Dogs love routine. They love getting up at the same time every day, and you coming home at the same time, and having the same word mean the same thing every time they hear it.
Cooperation
Everyone who shares the house must feel ok about having a dog. Dogs naturally live their lives in groups and most are very unhappy if they are left alone in a yard. They don't want a big yard to run in half as much as they want the warm smell of you when you are away, and your face to kiss when you are home. If you can't keep the dog in the house it is a bad idea to get the dog. Keeping a dog outdoors most of the time fails more often than it succeeds.
Planning
You always need to be one step ahead. What will change for you and the dog in the future? Will you be going away to school? Are you going to work? If you go away can you take the dog? If the dog can't go with you, what will happen to it? Always think about what comes next. Find out about puppy kindergarten before you get the puppy. Find out about dog training classes before your puppy gets out of kindergarten.
Choosing
All dogs are not alike. The dog that is right for me might not be a good dog for you. Dogs that are taught good manners have more freedom and are happier than dogs that are not taught good manners. If you have never taught a dog before you will be happier if you get one that is easier to teach. Some dogs have short hair that needs just a little brushing; some people enjoy dogs with long hair that needs careful care every day.
