Our Mission

The Alternative Humane Society (AHS) practices a no kill philosophy. Our goal is to help Whatcom County become a community where no healthy animals are euthanized. AHS is an all volunteer, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to improving the lives of dogs and cats and helping pets stay in loving homes. We work to prevent unwanted dog and cat births through spay/neuter assistance, to cultivate respect and awareness for the needs of animals through education, and to advocate for the humane treatment of cats and dogs in all areas of life.  With humane education at their core, our programs include Spay/Neuter Assistance, Dog Foster and Adoption, and Community Cats Information and Referral.

AHS is all volunteer

We have no shelter, we have no office, and we have no paid staff. 100% of the money we raise goes into our programs. Since 1977, AHS volunteers have been working out of our homes to help Whatcom County animals and their guardians. This year, we celebrated our 30th birthday!Join our mailing list to ask or tell us how you can help.

If you have spam software that requires authentication, you must allow all e-mails from the person who responds to our e-mails: jesse@jesselarsen.com. We do not respond to e-mails asking us to "authenticate" our e-mail address.

AHS History

In 1977, a small group of people got together to improve the odds for homeless and unwanted dogs and cats. They called themselves the Bellingham Humane Society, and they offered just one service. By telephone and by word of mouth they worked to find new guardians for homeless cats and dogs.

The Bellingham Humane Society grew to become the Alternative Humane Society, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, registered with the State of Washington. We are an all volunteer organization that provides spay/neuter assistance and operates a canine foster home/adoption program. What makes our organization unique is our commitment to the animals. That means that when we are able to take a homeless animal into our program, we feed that animal, shelter it, pay for the vet bills, the shots, and any illness that may develop until we find that animal a home, whether it takes three days or three years. That's a big commitment. We receive no government funding and are supported solely by donations from the public and business, and sporadic grants. Your support and/or donations help us continue our work.

With your help we will continue to help spay and neuter more dogs and cats and give more animals a much deserved second chance!
